Eating Disorder Treatment

What is an eating disorder?

Eating disorders are often referred to as physiological dysfunctions or structural disorders linked to psychological factors. Eating disorders involve certain behaviors that reflect a person’s mental state. Types of Eating Disorders are those who are obsessively afraid of getting fat, those who eat constantly and excessively in times of stress, or those who show vomiting behavior of psychological origin. Some of the negative behaviors of adolescent girls in order to avoid weight gain have led to the need for serious psychiatric treatment.

In individuals with eating disorders, the psychological situation that causes this behavior should be revealed and the person should be confronted without the need for defense mechanisms. Good psychotherapy shows very positive improvements in the treatment of eating disorders. People who are addicted to eating engage in physical exercise or strenuous physical pursuits to increase their weight loss.

1-Outpatient Treatment

Outpatient eating addiction treatment is applied to those with newly developing eating addiction or mild eating addiction and those who do not have complaints that require hospitalization. Outpatient eating addiction treatment includes one-month programs. If desired, the program can be extended according to need. Outpatient addiction treatment is initially 3 meetings per week and covers a period of 1 month. Patients can be admitted directly to the outpatient program.

In the program, each patient has a psychologist to solve psychological problems and a psychological counselor to develop life skills. In addition to medication, he is also treated by a psychiatrist under the supervision of a dietician when necessary.

Each client continues his/her treatment under the supervision of a psychologist, a psychological counselor or a psychiatrist.

The content of psychological interviews includes topics such as self-awareness and evaluation, self-expression, family relationships, risk analysis, addiction, high-risk situations, coping with the desire and urge to eat, resisting insistence, coping with anger and decision-making.

2- Residential Food Addiction Treatment

Inpatient eating addiction treatment is administered to binge eaters or eating addicts with purging behavior of psychological origin or those with complaints that require hospitalization. In inpatient treatment, the patient’s daily eating pattern, medication and psychological consultations are handled more comprehensively and ensure that the patient is under observation and control throughout the treatment.

Treatments are administered in 21-day periods and patients are subjected to a daily effective program. Throughout the treatment, the patient is accompanied by a psychologist who conducts one-on-one psychological interviews with the patient to solve psychological problems, and is also under the supervision of a medical doctor and a nurse 24 hours a day, in addition to medication by a psychiatrist.

The content of psychological interviews includes topics such as self-awareness and evaluation, self-expression, family relationships, risk analysis, addiction, high-risk situations, coping with the desire and urge to eat, resisting insistence, coping with anger and decision-making.

If necessary, the patient’s daily meal plan is created by a dietitian and the treatment continues under the control of the dietitian throughout the treatment.

Rehabilitation Program:

After a 21-day initial treatment period, suitable patients are enrolled in a rehabilitation program. Rehabilitation and psychosocial support programs are carried out for a minimum of 1 month, extending to 2 months, 3 months and 6 months. It is generally preferred that patients stay in the treatment center for at least 3 months.

In the inpatient program, patients participate in daily psychiatric consultation, individual psychological therapy, group therapy, occupational therapy, life skills training, activities such as walking, sports and spa, yoga and movie watching. In addition to all these treatment and rehabilitation program activities, families are also interviewed. Each patient has a psychiatric consultation throughout the day, individual and group therapy with 3 different psychologists, a psychological counseling session for life skills training, a medical doctor check-up for medical problems, and activity programs with experts for sports, hiking, spa and yoga programs.
